What is viscosity? Why use multi-weight motor oil? Which is the correct multi-weight motor oil to use?

1. Viscosity is the measurement of the oil’s resistance to flow.

2. Viscosity index is the number used to indicate the consistency of the oil with changes of temperature. An oil labeled 10W40 is a 10 weight at 0 degrees Fahrenheit but has a viscosity of 40 weight oil at 210 degrees Fahrenheit.

3. The type or grade of motor oil best for proper maintenance of your mower engine depends on many factors. For example, if you live in the northern region of the United States, where temperatures reach the upper 80s in the summer, you may require a petroleum-based synthetic blended 10W30 motor oil with an SJ or SL rating. If you live in the middle region of the United States, where temperatures reach the low to mid-90s in the summer, you may require a petroleum-based synthetic blended 10W40 motor oil with an SJ or SL rating. If you live in the southern region of the United States from Florida to Texas, where temperatures routinely reach 100+ degrees in the summer, you may require a petroleum-based synthetic blended 20W50 motor oil with an SJ or SL rating. Be sure to check your engine owner’s manual for the recommended weight of motor oil. It is best to follow the manufacturer’s recommendations.

Always check your owners manual for the proper oil and be sure to check out the updated specifications from the manufacture since they can change.
